Exxon Mobil Appeals Hearing Letter

Exxon is trying to restart massively corroded pipelines 901 and 903 that run through Chumash lands (Santa Barbara, Gaviota, San Ynez). Exxon, the company that bought the pipelines from Plains All American after the extensive oil spill which spanned over 150 miles of coastline in 2015, plans to add some valves instead of replace the pipeline structure. This is not a safe or sufficient fix to prevent future spills; it risks the safety of people, land, water, animals and insects with the inevitability of another oil spill.

Our ancestral homelands have been and continue to be greatly impacted by the oil spill. It was devastating to our cultural keystone species, Village sites, and people. When sensitive resources and habitats are destroyed it takes a long time for them to come back. Our people have always respected the relationship with land and water. It’s time our voices be heard.

The Santa Barbara Board of Directors will be holding an appeals hearing this Tuesday, August 22nd with an option for the public to attend via zoom (more info below).
