The Ventura Coastkeeper
has undertaken the monumental task of developing a Monitoring
Program for our local Calleguas Creek Watershed. The
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers Calleguas Creek - which
supplies more than a quarter of the county's needs for drinking and
irrigation water - as one of the region's most seriously damaged
watersheds. Our watershed flows through five cities and their
wastewater facilities, and the vast agricultural properties of Ventura
County, where huge amounts of pesticides are utilized for crops. There
are also unknown impacts of concrete channelization. Many pesticides
have not been regulated, and agriculture has been exempt from
pollution laws, which govern most other industry. Agribusiness has
continually increased the amounts of chemicals used in production of
foods and sod.
This is just one of the many tasks a Keeper undertakes in the effort
to clean up and maintain our regional waters. Please
