Restoration Projects: Ormond
Beach Wetlands
Ormond
Beach Wetlands is one of Southern California's last remaining
wetlands, and the site was targeted for possible industrial use.
Occidental Petroleum's attempted purchase of the wetlands, and
proposed Liquefied Natural Gas plant, stirred a large protest by
citizens and local business, as well as the Oxnard Mayor and City
council. For decades debris littered the wetlands, including rusted
autos, unused piping and other large, decayed metal objects.

All
this debris was removed during Wishtoyo's wetlands cleanup project in
the summer of 2003. Many of these items were hazardous to touch, being
sharp, rusted and broken. Wishtoyo also engaged in work to remove the
non native ice plant from the wetland.
After VCK completed Phase I and II of the Ormond Beach Wetlands
Cleanup project, the Coastal Conservancy purchased the wetlands,
preserving the site for future enjoyment for everyone. Wishtoyo was
fortunate to have had the services of the Oxnard City Corps., a youth
job training program, managed by the effective and innovative Efren
Gorre.
With the continued effort of government agencies and other non
profits, the Ormond Beach wetlands environment is taking a big step
towards becoming an environmental success, with a visitor center,
nature walks and a safe and preserved habitat for the birds and
creatures who find nourishment there.
