Request for Listing of a Tribal Marine Protected Area

Wishtoyo Foundation applied to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior for listing of a Tribal Network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, off the coast of Ventura. Marine Sanctuaries are important because they establish boundaries for research, preservation, and monitoring, to investigate the health and status of our ocean waters and marine habitat. There are Marine Sanctuaries located all over the U.S. and these have proven to be extremely valuable for university projects and scientific research as well as for monitoring the status of local fisheries. Wishtoyo has also completed a study, authored by Bioregional Planning Associates (Santa Barbara), of south-central California's Chumash maritime culture and history, a significant resource to be considered for a Marine Protected Area.
